Separate Tables contains a twin set of plays, each entirely self-contained but tangentially linked in time and location. Of particular note is Alan Bates; his retired army officer is exceptionally good, inhabiting the character so truely that he makes you care about what happens to him, and makes you despise the hypocrites at the boarding house who condemn him for his shortcomings. Julie Christie is equally excellent, using her classic beauty to stunning effect in the first play, and abandoning it totally in the second. This is essentially filmed theatre on a film set, and the viewer feels as if they are actually sitting in front of a stage. While not taking anything away from the film version with David Niven, Deborah Kerr and Rita Hayworth, this version is superior in all respects. Directed by John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy).
This disc is taken from a commercial video source and time-base corrected (image processed) through a professional VCR. Image and sound quality are excellent, 9.0 out of 10. Comes in a jewel case with front artwork, Sony disc.
Shipping and handling to the U.S. and Canada $8 US. To the rest of the world $8 US.
