Most of the glassware we cover in this book carries the FIRE-KING trademark of Anchor Hocking Glass Corp. of Lancaster, Ohio, and was produced from 1942 through the late 1970's. Anchor Hocking introduced a formula of heat-proof glass which was so durable it was guaranteed against breakage, due to heat, for two years. To identify this glass from other glassware on the market, each piece was embossed with the name FIRE-KING. This trademark is found embossed on about 90% of this glassware with the remaining 10% having labels attached identifying it as FIRE-KING glassware. In this line of glassware Anchor Hocking introduced some of their most popular colors; Jade-ite, Ivory, Royal Ruby, Forest Green, Azur, Milk White, and Turquoise Blue, along with many fired-on colors and floral patterns on Milk White glass.
We are including many new lines of Anchor Hocking glass in this new book made during the Fire-King years that may or may not have been made using the oven-proof formula of glass commonly called "borosilicate".
FIRE-KING was one of the least expensive lines of glassware. Many different companies used FIRE-KING glassware as premiums because of the inexpensive cost and the simple beauty of each piece. This is also one of the reasons you can almost always find at least one piece of FIRE-KING glassware or ovenware in the kitchen of any home that set up housein the U.S.A. during the Fire-King years.
We hope this book will help you identify each pattern and piece produced during the FIRE-KING years at Anchor Hocking. The past ten years we have searched flea markets, antique malls, libraries, the archives at Anchor Hocking, and talked with numerous collectors and dealers to compile the information found in this book.
As for the way we compiled the price guide, we used an average of the prices for each piece found at flea markets, antique shops, malls, and glass shows. We did not include yard sales and thrift shops as we felt their prices did not reflect the true value of collectible glassware. Also prices will vary in different areas of the country. During the past ten years prices have increased more than ten fold as FIRE-KING has emerged from the ranks of junk glassware to a very desirable collect. As with any collectible, the price one pays is the price he or she is willing to pay for the particular piece.
Most of the measurements listed were found in Anchor Hocking's catalogs and sales brochures. For those pieces not listed in the catalogs and sales brochures, we took the measurements and rounded them to the nearest 1/8 inch or filled the piece with water to measure the ounces.
